ATG: Who are you, where are you from, and where do you live?
My name is Jean Houndsome. I'm a 44 year old free spirit Born and raised in the picturesque town of Cape Town, South Africa. I Came to the USA as an au pair in 96 at age 22. I fell in love with America. Now for the last 2/12 years, I found myself in Sarasota, living the best years of my life. I mean, what's not to love about such a fantastic, artistic beautiful beach town? Never had an art class in my life. 100% self taught.
ATG: Why art?
Oh geez, I didn't pick art, it picked me, like many of us artist! I've never had an art class in my life. I was working as a nanny and as much as I love kids, I became stagnant, I knew I had more to offer.
Back in 2002, I was bored one day and my boyfriend suggested I paint a flower pot. It was an old, dirty, cobweb filled flower pot laying around. I knew nothing about painting. I ran down to a local art store, came home and cleaned the pot. I painted fine detail on it till 3am...and that was the exact moment my passion for painting was born. Then came wine glasses and Christmas ornaments. I painted everything in sight, I just loved to paint.
In 2004, I found myself at a construction site one day and saw them use this acrylic material, started playing around with it, making little bracelets. It took me forever to make one. Finally I decided to take the step and do my first craft show. Well, It was a long road to success, but I will say since I moved to Florida, my work has gone all over the country and beyond! I finally am feeling success and I'm grateful everyday!
ATG: How is your personality reflected in your work?
Very down to earth, colorful character, that loves to dance! I have many different layers to me, definitely not just black and white. I feel like my colors are dancing in my work and that definitely represents me well, I love work with movement.
ATG: How do you overcome creative blocks?
I've learned to walk away and go on with other projects. If it's not happening, it's not happening. If I can't paint, I may choose to sculpt instead for the week, but sometimes, you really just need a break to recharge and I allow myself that. When I'm on, I can make up for lost time, as I can paint till 4, 5 or 6am.
ATG: What art do you most identify with?
Anything with color and movement., anything from abstract to whimsical, colors make me happy!
ATG: Which Art Festivals do you enjoy the most?
Naples Fine Art Association, Mt Dora, ACE shows, Paragon Events, etc.
ATG: What inspires you?
Music, deep meditating soulful music, majestic sunsets and just overall being happy and living in the moment, many things but I paint from within, I've learned to trust my instincts and truly paint from my heart. Also, I listen to ideas customers give me and go back to the drawing board with a few ideas.
ATG: Professionally, what’s your goal?
I want to stick a hand painted cuff bracelet on as many women as humanly possible!!
I am hoping to have a store in Sarasota in the next 2 years.
ATG: Personally, what’s your goal?
Personally my goal is kind of the same, I love what I do, it makes me happy and I'm motivated every time my phone rings for the next order. I'm a pretty happy person. I live life to the fullest and try to really live and enjoy every beautiful moment each day has to offer! Even when it's sometimes not so pretty, lol!
ATG: What's the best piece of advice you can give?
That's simple: go with your passion, the money will follow.
